Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

“It’s Showtime!” Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to Beetlejuice, came out recently on September 6, 2024, and has had a lot of current popularity. The original movie and this current film were both directed by Tim Burton. Considering it was produced by the same creative director and consisted of multiple of the same cast members as the original, we can really hold high hopes for this movie.

The movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is about how Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder, has become famous for her ability to contact and see the dead. Her character is about to get married and she is becoming paranoid about seeing Beetlejuice, played by Michael Keaton. Her daughter Astrid Deetz, played by Jenna Ortega, is a non-believer, that is until she meets a boy named Jeremy. Jeremy reveals to Astrid that he is in fact a ghost and wants her to help him come back while withholding pertinent information from her about his true intentions. Jeremy tricks her into almost trading her life for his death. Eventually, Beetlejuice promises to only help Lydia save her daughter if she signs a contract to marry him. Beetlejuice gets rid of Jeremy and actually helps Lydia sees her fiancé’s hidden truths. However, he ultimately still tries to make Lydia become his wife while comedically making everyone participate in a musical number. In the end, it seems as though Lydia and Astrid are free of Beetlejuice's shenanigans, but we see a montage at the end of Astrid having Beetlejuice’s zombie baby. I thought this ending was interesting yet funny. I think the comedic aspect of both movies is what makes the franchise such a fan favorite.

I think this was a great renewal of a well beloved movie from the late 80s. The computer-generated imagery (CGI) was improved in BeetleJuice Beetlejuice as it looks much more realistic. Still, the special effects are not so graphic that it may make someone who is easily grossed out squeamish. So, I think both of the films are great family movies to watch during the spooky season.

As a lover of Halloween movies and an optimist for sequels to do well, I think this movie was created successfully. However, I do wish the movie was a bit longer. Near the beginning of the movie, when Astrid meets Jeremy, I felt as though their interactions were too short. It is for this reason that I wish we got to see the relationship between Astrid and Jeremy develop a bit more so that we could actually feel the betrayal more gravely when he turned out to be using her. When Beetlejuice begins to help Lydia’s wishes, he immediately sends Jeremy to what seems like hell. I think this plot in the storyline was resolved too quickly as well. The movie was a little rushed, as we could have seen the scenes develop thoroughly to really enhance the conflicts and relationships between characters. I would say the same thing with Lydia and her fiancé. I would have liked to have felt more astonished from the betrayal of his character turning out to be bad. When characters make dramatic shifts in personality, I personally think it makes the story that much more enjoyable and keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, this movie still manages to make me love the story despite my opinions on how to improve it.

If you are looking for a lighthearted movie with gothic themes to watch during the fall season or all year round, I would highly recommend watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. I would also recommend watching the original movie to further understand and develop an appreciation for the franchise that is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Be–.
